about

One of the principal characters “Ryan” remembers the minutes after the quake - leaving his home, with nothing more than a backpack, and the sense of freedom that he felt. The musical sequence that follows this introduces us to the new Christchurch and the people we will follow – a city full of rubble, giant diggers, temporary living and abundant opportunity. It’s upbeat and raw, driven by western sounding electric guitars and punchy mandolins - though the steady-handed strings tell us more is going on.

The music is anchored in the minor, yet spends much of the time trying to climb out of it, searching for hope in a dusty, bleak, mechanical landscape. By the end of the film however, this piece plays again in a kind of defiant reprise, and we feel emboldened by it – thanks to the unyielding spirit of the people we now know.
